Object description
An iconographic bust-length depiction of the hermit Saint Jerome in a cave with his attributes: a book, a skull, and a lion. The saint is traditionally portrayed as an older man with a long grey beard, wearing a red cloak draped over one shoulder. He holds a book in his hands and reads with concentration. The light falling from the left illuminates his inspired face and shoulders. Below the book lies a skull, which, according to the artistic tradition of "vanitas", serves as a reminder of the transience of life. To the right of the saint sits the lion he saved – his faithful companion – who gazes almost with human eyes at the viewer from the darkness of the cave.

On the reverse, there is an inscription: "Caraggio No.80 Sadowski. Fundacja im. Hieronima Sadowskiego".
