Biography
Ludomir Ludwik Dominik Benediktowicz (born August 5, 1844, in the village of Swiniary near Siedlce, Poland – died December 14, 1926, in Lviv) was a Polish painter, poet, chess player, and participant in the January Uprising of 1863, during which he lost both hands. After a period of recovery, he began painting using a special prosthesis. He studied painting under W. Gerson and continued his education at the Warsaw Drawing Class. After receiving a scholarship, he studied at the Munich Academy from 1868 to 1872. He also studied at the Krakow School of Fine Arts under Jan Matejko. He had his studio in Krakow. From 1912, he lived and worked in Lviv. His works included paintings on the theme of the January Uprising, landscapes (mostly forest scenes), portraits, and religious and genre scenes. He worked with watercolours and gouache and was also an art historian. Benediktowicz authored several books of poetry. In 1893, he participated in the founding of the Krakow Chess Club, and from 1895, he became its honorary president. After moving to Lviv, L. Benediktowicz became an honorary member of the Lviv Chess Club "Hetman". The artist's works are held in the National Museums of Warsaw, Krakow, Poznan, and Lviv.
Object description
The beauty of Benediktowicz's landscapes earned him the title of "Polish Barbizon painter". In the work from the collection, the grandeur of the pine forest is celebrated, depicted in atmospheric lighting – either at sunrise or sunset. Amid the mountains, mighty trees are shown, seemingly reaching their treetops towards the sky, adorned with light white clouds.
