The work depicts a formal knee-length portrait of a young Polish uhlan in a full dress uniform with epaulettes and a silver cross on his chest. In his right hand, the officer holds a tall confederate hat adorned with a white plume. The regiment number – 5 – is visible on the metal plate above the visor. With his left hand, the man holds the hilt of his sabre. A noble posture distinguishes the portrayed man. The gaze of the dark eyes is serious and confident, directed at the viewer. The background is neutral and light brown. The portrait depicts Jan Nepomucen Zoltowski, a second lieutenant of the 5th Uhlan Regiment named after Zamoyski, which was formed in December 1830 during the November Uprising at the expense of Count Konstanty Zamoyski in Warsaw.
