Object description
The "Finding of Moses" is one of the most popular Old Testament themes in world painting. In the painting by an unknown artist, the moment is depicted when the daughter of Pharaoh, accompanied by many handmaidens, comes to bathe by the banks of the Nile and discovers a baby among the reeds. The scene occurs against a backdrop of trees, stone structures, and pyramids. The Egyptian princess is depicted in a bright red cape with a crown on her head. She points with her hand to a woman kneeling and reaching out to the boy, who two maidservants are holding. This is likely Moses' mother, whom the daughter of Pharaoh took as a nurse for the found child. The painting is executed in bright, rich colours in an academic style.
