Object description
In the centre of the canvas, against a dark background, the artist placed the figure of Saint Mary Magdalene in a simple, unadorned light dress. By European iconography, the depiction of the saint shows her wavy dark hair uncovered. She sits in a relaxed pose, her pale face looking sad and contemplative. With her left hand, the woman holds a skull resting on the table, a symbol of the transience of human life. Nearby the skull, an open book is depicted – either a prayer book or a Gospel. In the upper left, two angels hover above the woman, their faces turned towards the sky, illuminated by divine light.
