Object description
The painting depicts Vincent Ferrer, a Spanish saint. Vincent lived an ascetic life and preached fervently, converting people to Catholicism. While suffering from a severe illness, he had a mystical vision of Saint Dominic and Saint Francis, who healed him and encouraged him to preach worldwide. Upon receiving permission, Vincent became an itinerant preacher, traveling through Spain, France, Italy, England, Ireland, and Scotland. Ferrer preached about the coming of the Antichrist, the approach of the Last Judgment, and called for repentance, and because of that, he was called "The Angel of the Judgment". The saint wrote many works, including "Treatise on the Spiritual Life", "On the Current Schism in the Church", and collections of sermons. Vincent Ferrer is usually depicted on horseback in Dominican monastic attire, often with angelic wings, holding fire or a book. The painting portrays a scene with a background of the sea and a blue sky, with the entrance to a cave, where in the foreground, a young monk is depicted facing the viewer, with his head turned three-quarters to the right and his gaze directed downwards. The man is dressed in a white habit and a black cloak. His left hand is raised upwards, and in his right hand, he holds a book. A halo is around the saint's head and wings behind his shoulders. A part of a trumpet directed towards the monk's head is reproduced in the upper right corner.
