Object description
The cult of the Mother of God has become extremely popular in Western and Eastern rite Christianity. According to traditional iconography, she was depicted with the baby Jesus in her arms. The creation of the first icons is attributed to the Evangelist Luke. The earliest images of the Virgin Mary are known from the catacombs of Priscilla (2nd century). Over time, different types of the iconography of the Mother of God developed: Maria Orans, Hodegetria, Panachranta, Eleusa, the Nursing Madonna, Annunciation, Deesis, the Dormition of the Mother of God, etc.). In this sculptural composition from the Borys Voznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery collection, an unknown master of the 18th-century Austrian School deviates from the established iconographic schemes and gives the work vitality and narrative. The Madonna is depicted on a throne, but her face is illuminated by a deep, quite earthly maternal feeling. The genre is reflected in the figure of the child, who is not on her knees but to the right of the throne, close to her mother's hand. The gilding adds to the grandeur of the sculptural group. Illustrative are the Baroque expression of the drapery and the skilful modelling of the forms.
