Object description
An appeal to ancient values and meanings, aesthetic ideals, images, and form-making is a feature of the Renaissance, Classicism, Baroque, and the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries culture. An example of the actualisation of the ancient theme is the image of the Maenad, one of the nymphs who, according to ancient Greek mythology, accompanied the god of wine, Dionysus. The rapid ecstatic movement, fluttering draperies, and a bowl of wine indicate that the depicted element is related to the Bacchanalia festivals, ancient mystical orgiastic festivals in honour of Dionysus (Bacchus).
