The painting came from the National Museum in Lviv collection and is part of an altar triptych. It depicts the Holy Virgin Mary surrounded by apostles, holding a candle, with her head bowed and eyes closed. Next to her are the attributes of the burial rite – holy water, a censer, and readings from Scripture. The scene of the Dormition is connected to the scene of the Assumption. The earliest apocryphal sources are known in the West as the "Assumption of Mary" and in the East as the "Word of St. John the Theologian on the Dormition of the Holy Virgin Mary". The Eastern Fathers of the Church believed that the Holy Virgin Mary fell asleep and was resurrected. In the last days of her life, the Holy Virgin Mary spent time in Jerusalem, having returned from Ephesus, where she had lived with the Apostle John after the Resurrection of Christ. From the Apocrypha, we learn that the Archangel Gabriel announced to the Holy Virgin Mary her transition to eternity three days before her passing. On that day, all the apostles preaching in various parts of the world gathered in Jerusalem.
