Object description
In the 19th century, bust representations of mythological beings were particularly popular in interior design. The sculpture depicts a Bacchante or Maenad – a nymph who accompanied Dionysus in his travels, draped in flowing robes entwined with grapevines. The Bacchantes captivated all who crossed their path to partake in the rites in honour of Bacchus. The woman's head is gently tilted to the left and adorned with a branch of grapes. Her bare shoulders are draped with fabric.
