The composition of this work was probably influenced by the ancient sculpture "Hermes Resting", attributed to Lysippos. It was discovered in the second half of the 18th century but remained popular throughout the following century. As in the ancient Greek composition, a naked young man sits on a rock at rest. He holds a lyre on his knee, resting his right hand on it and supporting the instrument with his left. On his head with curly hair is a laurel wreath. The lyre player likely represents the god Apollo, the patron of music, who was often depicted with this instrument. On the texture of the massive bronze stone near the young man's right leg, a lion's mask can be discerned. The sculptural composition is mounted on a marble slab. In terms of style, the work has features of Classicism. It was created by a professional sculptor of the first half of the 19th century.
