Germanicus Julius Caesar was an ancient Roman politician and military commander who distinguished himself with victories over the Germanic tribes. He was a poet and orator. Twice elected consul, he was immensely popular among the people. He was poisoned by his enemies. This is a full-length figure of an ancient Roman military commander, a middle-aged man depicted in a frontal view, dressed in a paludamentum (military cloak) draped from the waist down. The upper part of the body and legs are bare. The man holds the drapery of his clothes with his left hand, while pressing a short sword to his thigh. In his right hand, bent at the elbow and raised to his shoulder, he holds a scroll. On his head, modelled in a ¼ turn to the left, is short wavy hair. His face has regular features. Both legs are planted firmly on the ground. The sculpture is mounted on a round bronze base placed on a small pedestal of yellow-pink marble.
