Pencil copies by Yulian Zaiats reproduce two pastel works by Maurice Quentin de La Tour, preserving the recognisable style of the French master, but reinterpreted in black and white graphics. The first portrait of Capuchin Father Emmanuel (1757), where in the original the pastel conveys restrained spiritual concentration, immersion in the inner world, is emphasised by the simplicity of monastic clothing and warm, gentle tones. In Y. Zaiats' copy, this inner concentration is expressed through soft rhythmic hatching and an emphasis on the expression of the eyes, which become the main emotional centre of the composition. The second portrait is of actress, dancer, and playwright Marie Justine Benoîte Favart (1750). In the original, Maurice Quentin de La Tour depicts her with refined coquetry and theatrical liveliness, enhanced by the rich colours of the pastels and the play of light on her face. In Y. Zaiats' graphic version, these features are conveyed through clear contours, delicate chiaroscuro, and special attention to facial expressions, capturing the model's combination of artistry and spontaneity.
