The pencil copy, created by Yulian Zaiats, reproduces the portrait of historian and restorer of Ruthenian art, Oleksandr Anisimov, based on the original by Borys Kustodiiev from 1915. In the original painting, Oleksandr Anisimov is depicted against the backdrop of Ruthenian architectural monuments, emphasising his professional field and scientific interests. Borys Kustodiiev's composition combines realistic accuracy in conveying appearance with the specific colour scheme characteristic of his mature style. In Y. Zaiats' version, the background and secondary details have been removed, and the emphasis has been shifted exclusively to the face and upper part of the figure. The result is a restrained, frontal portrait, in which the figure is depicted wearing a jacket and tie. The chiaroscuro modelling, based on subtle hatching, emphasises the intellectual's features: a focused gaze, a clearly defined oval face, and a balanced posture. In this way, the artist translates a multifaceted pictorial image into a concise but expressive graphic form, preserving the psychological depth of the portrait.
