Object description
The carved image of an angel's head on the cartouche served as a decorative element. Angel heads had a special meaning – they personified the heavenly presence, purity, and protection of the temple. The elongated oval face, characterised by a high forehead, protruding cheeks, and a massive chin, is modelled with soft, smooth lines. The large, almond-shaped, clearly defined eyes radiate a focused and serious gaze, creating a sense of significance. The contours of the face are framed by wavy hair, styled in rhythmic curls falling on both sides. The work reflects the style of Baroque sacred sculpture – emphasised decorativeness, emotional expressiveness, and a tendency towards grandeur even in small details. Despite certain losses and damage, the work retains its artistic impact. The image appears to radiate seriousness, yet remains gentle and is deeply rooted in faith and sacred sculpture.
