Object description
The wooden polychrome sculpture of Christ was made in imitation of Western iconography. The figure of the Saviour reflects the expressiveness of the image: a slightly curved body, bent knees, and crossed feet, creating a rhythmic movement that emphasises the drama of the scene. The arms are outstretched, but not bent to the point of extreme tension, and are gently lowered in a characteristic curve. The Saviour's face is turned to the side and tilted toward the right shoulder, expressing calmness, sorrow, and at the same time, an inner grandeur. The master paid special attention to recreating the anatomically realistic features of the human figure: clearly defined ribs, tense abdominal and chest muscles, and accentuated physical suffering. Christ's body has not lost its plastic harmony – its proportions are preserved, and its silhouette is graceful. The naked figure of the Saviour is covered by a drapery on the hips, fixed with two rows of red cord. It is modelled with voluminous carved deep vertical folds. A blue perizoma (loincloth) with red accents enlivens the composition, contrasting with the naked body. The preserved remains of polychromy attest to the original multicoloured composition and decorative richness. In terms of style, the work leans toward Baroque expressionism, albeit with a noticeable simplification of forms, which suggests its folk origin.
