Object description
The sculptural Crucifixion is notable for its drama and depth of image. Christ is depicted at the moment of greatest physical and spiritual suffering, emphasised by the tension of his body and the expression on his face – sad and sorrowful, with a hint of submission. The figure of Christ is texturally detailed. The master's desire to convey the anatomical features of the human body is evident, as seen in the defined muscles and the relief of the chest and abdomen. The folds of the loincloth tied in a knot create an additional rhythm in the composition. The crucifixion is an example of wooden sacred sculpture, where minimal means are used to achieve a deep symbolic meaning of the image of Christ, who has undergone severe challenges.
