Object description
The wooden sculpture of the Crucifixion is an example of Baroque sacred sculpture, executed in the technique of woodcarving with its original polychromy, now partially lost. The tense body of Christ is slightly arched in a characteristic S-shaped line, creating an impression of dynamism, continuity of movement, and suffering. The arms are raised and widely outstretched, not in a strictly horizontal line but at an angle, which enhances the dramatic effect. The Saviour’s head is inclined to the side and slightly downward, with an expression of sorrow and humility, while the closed eyes and parted mouth convey the moment of death. Additional movement and rhythm in the composition are created by the wavy strands of dark hair and beard. Christ is presented not only as a martyr but also as the Redeemer, accepting death with humility and dignity. The modelling of the body, with well-defined muscles, is rendered anatomically, somewhat generalised, yet emphasising suffering and exhaustion, evident in the emaciation of Christ’s figure. On the hips, the perizoma is distinctly carved, tied with a cord. The drapery, treated with deep folds and a large knot, balances the composition. The sculptural image combines features of realistic modelling with the emotional expressiveness of the Baroque, corresponding to the general tendency of sacred art of the period.
