Object description
The sculptural image of the angel's head has significant losses of the paint layer and primer, revealing the texture of the wood in large areas. The facial features are somewhat generalised, with slight asymmetry. However, the work displays the expressiveness characteristic of the Baroque style – a slightly open mouth and a lively gaze. A slight tilt of the head to the left and light waves of short hair around the round face add a certain emotional colour to the image. The image of the angel's head reveals the sculptor's desire to enliven the image, giving it human, almost childlike features to recreate an atmosphere of joy, heavenly light, and divine protection. Despite significant damage, the carved head shows a long history of existence and sacred significance in its original environment.
