Object description
The sculptural image of a cherub was an element of decorative adornment of the altar, iconostasis, or architectural composition. The image of the angel's head is balanced and harmonious, with the main emphasis on inner expression. The sculpturally crafted image is distinguished by the smoothness of its contours, giving the cherub a lively and expressive appearance. The volume is conveyed softly, without sharp contrasts, creating a sense of tenderness. The moving innocence is emphasised by the simplicity of the forms, the absence of sharp details, and the roundness of the outlines: plump cheeks, a snub nose, small lips, and large, round eyes. The head turned to the side gives a sense of space and lively movement.
