Object description
This small panel painting represents the city life near the pier in Amsterdam in the 17th century. The architectural landscape's dominant feature is the Montelbaanstoren, built in 1512 to protect the city. It was extremely popular among Dutch artists in the 17th century. In the foreground, a man transports barrels along the Oudeschans canal. The boats are moored behind him in the distance. On the street, in front of the houses, appears a scene of the everyday life of Amsterdam burghers. Other masters usually added the figures after the painting was almost finished.
