Biography: Salomon Rombouts is an almost unknown Dutch landscape painter of the second half of the 17th century. He was born in Harlem in the family of landscape painter Gillis Rombouts. In 1681, Salomon immigrated to Italy, and little is known about this journey. Between 1689 and 1692, he worked under the patronage of the Marquis Giovanni Vincenzo Salviati, and in 1692–1697, he was a member of the Florentine Academy of Fine Arts. Like many Dutch painters, Rombouts specialised in particular genres and even subgenres, which allowed him to achieve high mastery skills. Landscapes with forests, views of the sea coasts, and winter landscapes were the main subjects in the artist's works. The idealisation of nature is a characteristic feature of his paintings, which corresponded to the customers' tastes.

Object description

This painting shows the idyllic rural life near the artist's native Harlem. In the foreground, two men are sitting nonchalantly near the well. Behind them, one can see a hut among the trees. Presumably, here Rombouts depicted an imaginary Dutch landscape, recognised by a typical village church spire.
