Object description
Jan Brueghel the Elder is regarded as the founder of still life painting. In his works, flowers are not only a decorative or allegorical element but also the main object of the work. It is known that the artist worked exclusively for a close circle of people, avoiding state and church commissions. It is unlikely that the artist painted pictures in large numbers for the art market because he had no assistants and worked independently. The painting "Flowers" is a vivid example of an imitation of Brueghel's floral still lifes. It depicts a lush bouquet of various flowers in a ceramic jug. To create greater realistic persuasiveness, the artist, like Jan Brueghel, represented a still life from a high point of view. The work was probably executed by one of his close followers. The author was familiar with Jan Brueghel's creative work as the composition almost completely reproduces the "Bouquet in a Vase" from the Royal Museum in Antwerp collection. The master perfectly copied the bouquet in detail but substituted the richly decorated vase with a more modest ceramic jug with a mascaron.
