Object description
The overall dark palette of the canvas directs the viewer's attention only to the essential elements of the painting. The artist roughly outlines the older man's head and hands. He only highlights a part of the subject's face, which is sufficient for understanding the painting's intent. The portrait is exceptionally rich in inner depth, without detailing or idealising facial features. At the centre of the canvas, the inclined head of the man with a downward gaze is depicted. Grey hair and a beard stand out from the dark background. His gaze is directed downward at the chalice in his left hand. His right hand holds a carafe. The artist skilfully captures the contrast between rough, aged hands and the delicate glass goblet. The overall impression is that the depicted character, with the next sip of the inebriating liquor, will descend into the darkness of the canvas.
