Object description
The cross is one of the most important symbols and amulets in the life of Christians. The most common type is the hand cross. It is an eight-pointed cross with an elongated central and sloping lower crosspiece. The composition is simple and laconic. On the front of the Greek cross, there is a picturesque crucifixion, where the master, using a traditional compositional solution, has depicted the naked figure of Christ with a bandage on his thighs. Jesus is shown with his head bowed, wearing a crown of thorns, and his arms outstretched. The image occupies the central frame and part of the central stem. It is executed imitating the Byzantine iconography, in which the Saviour is nailed to the cross with four nails. The artist has reproduced the anatomical features of the human body. Above Christ's head is a plaque with the letters "INRI". On the four sides of the Crucifixion are three-dimensional metal circles, which apparently contained painted figures of the Evangelists, which have not survived.
