Biography: Wlodzimierz Fryderyk Konieczny (1886–1916) was a sculptor, graphic artist, and illustrator. He took a drawing course at the Lviv Industrial School, and in 1901–1903, he studied at the School of Woodworking in Zakopane. Between 1903 and 1908, he studied at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts under Konstanty Laszczka and Jozef Pankiewicz. Between 1909 and 1911, he worked in Paris and later in Krakow. In 1913, he contributed to the foundation of the Krakow studios. In 1914, Wlodzimierz Konieczny became a soldier of the 1st Legion Brigade. He died in Volyn.

Object description

"Bust of a Girl" (1910), from the collection of Borys Voznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery, is an early work by the 24-year-old Wlodzimierz Fryderyk Konieczny, probably created during the sculptor's stay in Paris or short visits to Lviv. The work is characterised by an attempt to reproduce spontaneous movement and a momentary state, which the young artist's chisel did not quite succeed in. As a result, the child's gaze is somewhat mannered and exalted, and the tilt of the head is unnatural. At the same time, Konieczny's undoubted artistic talent is evident in his skilful, soft modelling of the forms.
