Object description
Gaius Julius Caesar (100 BC – 44 BC) was an ancient Roman statesman, politician, military leader, and writer. He was one of the most prominent politicians and military commanders of the ancient world. He was a Roman consul, dictator, and the de facto founder of a new government form in Rome – the empire. The persona of Gaius Julius Caesar was popular during the Renaissance and in the modern era. A figure of a military leader, similar in appearance, was found during archaeological excavations in Rome. The work is a full-length figure of the Roman commander, probably Gaius Julius Caesar, depicted as a middle-aged man in front view, dressed in a paludamentum (a military cloak) with a lorica (pteruga) around his thighs. He holds the drapery of his clothing with his left arm bent at the elbow, while pressing a sword to his shoulder. In his right hand, lowered down, the man holds a small sphere. The figure is supported by his right leg, with his left knee slightly bent. The cloak on the right shoulder is fastened with a fibula. He is wearing shoes resembling Roman calcei. The man has short, wavy hair, and a sullen face, devoid of any sign of willpower.
