Object description

Ludwika Potocka (1712–1785) – daughter of Jozef Wandalin Mniszek and Konstancja Tarlo, wife of Jozef Potocki (1691–1751), Crown Hetman of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. She was the owner of the town of Mykulyntsi. The half-length portrait of the woman is painted in a nominal oval in the traditions of secular portraiture of the 18th century. Stylistic changes in Ukrainian portraiture coincided with the changes in European painting. The image isn't static but emotionally charged and expressive and depicts the subject's inner world. Ludwika Potocka is shown at an older age; the artist does not try to hide it. On the canvas, the author has meticulously depicted a face that is no longer young, with a massive nose and a double chin. The woman wears a gorgeous décolleté dress, with a bonnet on her head and a black headscarf over it that is falling and is wrapped around her neck. A flat painting style and a reserved colour scheme characterise the portrait.
