Biography
Jan Cybis (16 February 1897 – 13 December 1972) was an outstanding Polish painter and teacher. He is a representative of the so-called "colourism". Studied at the Art Academy in Wrocław (1919–21) and Krakow (1921–24) from Jozef Mehoffer and Jozef Pankiewicz. Taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (1945). From 1924–34 he worked in Paris. Transformed the creative techniques of post-Impressionism, created national landscapes and still-lifes, distinguished by his bold and free manner of painting, fresh and bright sounding colours.
Object description
From right to left in the painting stretches the riverside. In the lower-left corner, a pearlescent coloured bank can be seen. On the opposite bank to the right is a house with a red brick wall and a grey-green fence. To the left of the house is a group of trees forming a spherical-shaped crown. Behind the trees, a narrow bank is overturned across the river, supported in the middle by a single pillar. In the background is the bank with sketched trees. The sky is an ultramarine colour.
