Object description
This small-sized canvas depicts the tragic scene of the Crucifixion. The cross with the crucified Jesus Christ rises against the dark background of the cloudy sky. The Virgin Mary, John the Apostle, and Mary Magdalene, who are mourning the execution of the Saviour, are depicted below. A skull with bones, the symbol of Adam and Eve's sin, lies nearby. The dark colour scheme with expressive contrasts of pale figures enhances the emotional effect of the scene. The author's style is similar to Martin Johann Schmidt's works. This work was probably inspired by one of Schmidt's compositions on the same subject.
