Object description
Crucifixion images were an essential part of the decorative ornamentation of churches. It is sometimes referred to as "crucifix" from the Latin "cruci fixus", meaning "nailed to the cross". The painting depicts the crucified Jesus. On the top of the cross, against a red background, is a golden inscription: "I.N.R.I.". The suffering and wounds of the tormented Christ are depicted remarkably realistically.
