Object description
Pieta is a poignant biblical subject in which the figures of a mother and son, the Virgin Mary and Jesus, are depicted. It is a tragic narrative of love and sorrow portrayed in art for many years. Against a dark, mountainous background, a seated female figure is shown in profile with her head tilted to the right – the Virgin Mary. Her clothes are painted in dark and deep shades, and her face expresses profound grief. On her knees, she holds the lifeless body of Christ, his pale form lying on a white shroud. In the left part of the canvas, two angels are depicted, with one of them holding Christ's hand.
