Biography
Petro Kholodnyi the Younger (July 22, 1902, Kyiv – January 24, 1990, Glen Spey, USA) was a Ukrainian monumental painter, graphic artist, iconographer, and stained-glass artist. He was the son of painter Petro Kholodnyi. He studied at the Prague Ukrainian Studio of Plastic Art (1926–1928) and the Warsaw Academy of Arts (1928–1934). After graduating from the academy, he was sent to Italy for improvement and visited Paris. From 1935, Petro Kholodnyi the Younger taught drawing and tempera technique at the Warsaw Academy. He belonged to the group of Ukrainian artists "Spokij" and ANUM. In 1950, the artist moved to the United States, where he became an honorary member of the Ukrainian Artists' Association in the USA (OMUA). The artistic manner of Petro Kholodnyi is characterised by an appeal to the Neo-Byzantine style with the use of Ukrainian folk art elements, as well as the influence of modern trends, Cubism, and Constructivism. Petro Kholodnyi the Younger is primarily known as a master of sacred art (iconostasis, stained-glass windows, mosaics) and small book graphics: bookplates, brand names, monograms, and postcards. During his life, the artist's works were exhibited in Ukraine and abroad: in Lviv, Warsaw, Berlin, Budapest, and Brussels.
