Biography
Yurii Vovk (March 21, 1899, Kyiv – November 14, 1961, Prague) was a graphic artist, portrait painter, and book illustrator. He came from the family of ethnographer and anthropologist Kh. Vovk. He studied at the Kyiv Academy of Arts (1917–1919) and privately in Rome and Prague. He graduated from the Ukrainian Studio of Plastic Arts (1927). He was a member of the international ideological and artistic society "Scythians" (1929–1932). In 1923, he took part in the cultural and artistic exhibition of the Ukrainian Galician Army (UGA) camps, which took place in Josefow. From 1932 to 1960, Yurii Vovk collaborated with Prague and Slovak publishing houses of fiction. He was the author of the sign of M. Taranko's publishing house in Lviv. He designed books for Lviv publishing houses "Svit Dytyny" and "Chaika". He illustrated poetry collections by V. Khmeliuk and prose by I. Franko and B. Lepkyi. He worked in the technique of pastel, charcoal, and coloured pencils. His works were displayed at collective exhibitions in Lviv, Prague, Paris, and the USA. A significant part of the artist's works was lost during the artist's lifetime. Now, the works are kept in the Museum of Ukrainian Culture in Svidnik (Slovakia), the Museum of National Writing and the Slavic Library (Prague), and private collections.
