Biography
Vasyl Krychevskyi (December 31, 1872, Vorozhba village, Kharkiv province, russian empire – November 15, 1952, Caracas, Venezuela) was a Ukrainian artist, architect, graphic artist-innovator, art critic, creator of the national architectural modern style, author of the state coat of arms of Ukraine, banknotes and postage stamps, and one of the first production designers of Ukrainian cinema. He received his education at the Kharkiv Technical Railway School, where he studied architecture and drawing techniques under the guidance of Professor S. Zahoskin. He was the chief architectural assistant of Academician A. Beketov. In 1903, he received the first prize at the competition for the design of the building of Poltava Zemstvo, which became an example of a new architectural style – Ukrainian Architectural Modernism, the basis of which was the heritage and tradition of Ukrainian folk construction. In 1917, Krychevskyi became one of the founders of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and the initiator of the creation of the Ukrainian Architectural Institute (1922). In 1918, the Central Rada approved the coat of arms project designed by V. Krychevskyi – the trident of Prince Volodymyr the Great, framed with an olive wreath. Nowadays, it is in his classical drawing that the ancient trident decorates the state flags and papers of Ukraine. V. Krychevskyi is the author of numerous paintings and graphic works, bookplates, and scenery for performances and films. In particular, Krychevskyi designed the first colour film, "Sorochynskyi Fair", in Ukraine (1937). Some of the artist's works are abroad, mainly in the Ukrainian New York Museum. Several dozen works are in the collection of the Kharkiv Art Museum and the Museum of the Ukrainian Diaspora in Kyiv.
