Object description
Antonina Rzewuska (?–after 1777) was a daughter of Josef Potocki, a Crown Great Guard, and Teofila Cetner. In 1731, she became the second wife of Seweryn Josef Rzewuski (Krzywda coat of arms), the elder of Chelm and Luboml, and the voivode of Volyn. Presumably, the oval image of the woman was painted by a court artist from Chortkiv. In the painting, Antonina Rzewuska is depicted without any jewelry. Provincial portraits by primitive artists took a leading part in Ukraine in the 18th century. They were marked by rich colors, a planar way of presenting images, and detailing of the portrayed characters. The elderly face of Antonina Rzewuska is carefully painted by the artist. Dark mourning clothes indicate that the portrait could have been painted after the death of her husband Seweryn Rzewuski, who died in 1754. A similar image of Antonina Rzewuska can be found in Poland. It differs in the format of the work.
