Object description
The full-length figure is a sculptural representation of a monk in a static contrapposto pose. Realistic tendencies can be traced in his figurative reproduction. The man's slender silhouette is constrained in a Renaissance-like manner. His body is covered with a habit, girded with a coarse rope, leaving only his feet exposed in sandals with thick soles. The drapery of the clothing is restrained, dominated by straight, long folds, worked with parallel recesses, and rendered in low relief. The softly carved clothing folds wrap around the body without deep creases. The master pays little attention to the volumetric plasticity of the face, which is somewhat schematically depicted. However, a pleading expression is clearly discernible, accentuated by slightly rolled, deeply set small eyes. The composition of the work reveals a stiff, hieratic pose.
