Object description
The swordsman carried the sultan's sabre during various ceremonies and was the first servant whose duties included many functions. The man is depicted in full-face, with his body turned three-quarters to the left. He is dressed in a red brocade caftan with a floral motif, girded with a yellow belt. On his head, he wears a special braid covering, worn by the janissaries, the sultan's guards and the barn service. With one hand he holds the sultan's sabre, resting it on his right shoulder.
