Object description
The sculpture shows the figure of a saint in knight's armour, wrapped in drapery. The saint wears high sandals, typical of Roman soldiers. The man is depicted in a curved S-shaped silhouette, characteristic of Baroque sculpture. In this work, the artist focused on the solution of an athletically shaped body. The face, with its detailed features, also plays an important role. The ascetic expression is conveyed by the expressive almond-shaped eyes with a detached, unmoved gaze, the dark eyebrows, the straight nose, the prominent cheekbones, the sunken cheeks, and the slightly parted lips framed by the waves of a short dark beard clearly outlined by the arcs of the eyelids. The expression of the sculptural image is given by the stole that falls from the shoulders to the hips. It falls in monumental layers of voluminous flags. Dynamic folds, modelled by abstract planes with soft ribbed protrusions, emphasise the emotional content of the sculptural image. Despite the saint's expressive pose, composed in classical contrast, the sculptural image is characterised by restraint.
