Biography
Franz Werner von Tamm was a German artist who worked in Italy and Austria. He studied in Hamburg under Dietrich von Sosten (1669–1695) and Johann Joachim Pfeiffer (1662–1701). Initially, the artist leaned towards historical painting but later focused on still lifes. He occasionally worked with Pieter van Bloemen (1657–1720) and Carel de Vogelaer (1653–1695) before becoming a follower of Carlo Maratti (1625–1713), who painted the figures in his still lifes. While in the Italian capital, Tamm joined the Dutch artist group "Schilderbent", where he was named "Dapper". Through Maratti, he received commissions from Roman patrician families, and their patronage made the artist well-known in Spain, France, England, and Germany. Tamm created floral still lifes in the Roman-Dutch tradition of Mario de Fiori and became a master in this field.
