Object description
The Madonna and the Child is one of the most famous and beloved images in Christian iconography. This theme had a significant impact on Western culture. The Madonna is a symbol of purity, love, and compassion. She is the protector of children and mothers. Jesus is a symbol of salvation and hope. This scene depicts the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus, whom the mother typically holds in her arms. The image of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus first appeared in early Christian art but reached its peak during the Renaissance. This canvas is a fragmentary replica of the painting by Parmigianino (Munich, Old Pinakothek). This version is one of more than two dozen references to the theme of Parmigianino's work, recorded worldwide. The theme "Madonna and Child" or "Madonna with Emmanuel" is a traditional representation in Western European, particularly Italian, art, depicting the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus (less commonly without him). Researcher V. Markova suggests that this is a copy after Antonio da Correggio.
