Object description
Marked by an almost impressionistic freedom of shape modelling, skilful use of alabaster's luminosity, internal dynamism of sculptural volumes and echoes of Rocaille refinement, "Bust of a Woman" from the collection of Borys Voznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery is attributed to an unknown Lviv sculptor of the mid-nineteenth century. The work is characterised by a synthesis of sculpture and painting, revealed in the vibrating texture and structural silhouette that seems to melt in the light and air. The work shows the author's admiration for the "objectivity" of the world – light locks of thick, curly hair, soft folds of fabric, an abundance of elegant lace at the neckline and a "Schute" hat, fashionable in the 1840s. The artistic appeal of the bust is created by the skilful modelling of a charming female face, as if illuminated by soft summer light, with an impressionistic, momentary expression devoid of distinct individual features. The bust resembles the easel compositions by the famous Lviv sculptor Kazimierz Witold Ostrowski (1848–1880) – "Polonaise", "Shooter and Switezianka", "Halka and Jontek" (c. 1880; Borys Voznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery), which are unusual for the artistic traditions of the time.
