Object description
St. Francis of Assisi (1181/1182 – 3 October 1226) was an Italian Christian monk, missionary, and founder of the Franciscan Order. His secular name was Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone. He understood nature as a reflection of the Creator and called animals, birds, the moon, stars and water his "brothers" and "sisters", and the earth his "sister-mother". He preached to the birds. Artistically and symbolically, Francis was depicted with a tonsure, wearing a brown Franciscan habit, girded with a rope with three knots, symbols of the three vows of selflessness, chastity and obedience, with stigmata on his feet and under his rib. The saint's attributes are the crucifix, the Bible and a skull, symbolising the transience of life. Birds and animals surround him. The sculpture in the Gallery's collection shows the saint kneeling at the foot of the crucifix. The work is characterised by action, expression and skilful, careful modelling of the forms.
