Object description
The Virgin Mary and the mother of John the Baptist, Elizabeth, were related. Mary was a relative of Elizabeth, the wife of Zechariah, a priest of the tribe of Abijah, and a descendant of Aaron of the tribe of Levi: "There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth" (Luke 1:5,8). When the Saviour was crucified, his mother and his favourite disciple, John, were standing near the cross. Looking at them, the Lord said that the Mother of God would become John's mother from now on. This is how the Bible tells it: "Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home" (John 19:27). The peculiarity of the work from the collection of Borys Voznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery is a lyrical interpretation of the theme, softness and fluidity of forms. The idyllicity and plastic completeness of the relief are given by the charming tenderness and slight inclination of the Mother of God's head, the consolidation of the composition by the diagonal of children's hands, and the oval format.
