Biography
Severo Calzetta da Ravenna (Ravenna, c. 1465 – Ravenna, c. 1543) was an Italian sculptor. Born in Ravenna or Ferrara, he worked as a bronze castor in these cities, but mostly in Padua. He was a master of the Renaissance and Mannerism, one of the most popular bronze sculptors of his time alongside Andrea Briosco (Riccio), Moderno (Galeazzo Mondella), and others. He created sculptures on religious themes, such as the Crucifixion, which is housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art. However, the main themes of the artist's work were pagan motifs, including dragons and satyrs, as well as functional objects like inkwells, candlesticks, and oil lamps. The figures of satyrs, made in the artist's workshop and other workshops based on his designs, were particularly popular among the wealthy. Da Ravenna's works were included in the collection of Isabella d'Este, often referred to as the "prima donna of the Renaissance".
Object description
The attribution is based on similar works by Ravenna (Daniel Katz Gallery, London) and his workshop (Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest). This work is less refined and detailed, and is therefore attributed to the circle of Severo da Ravenna. The figure of a satyr – a human-like creature with horns and goat legs – is depicted leaning on its left knee, with its right arm raised and bent at the elbow and its left arm lowered. The satyr's head is raised as if he is saying something, while listening to the response. The figure is mounted on a cubic wooden pedestal on a profiled base.
Inscriptions
On the edge of the pedestal base, there is an inscription in white paint: "№ С-І-589/ Л.ОКГ". On the bottom of the pedestal, there is a mark with the inscription "GNm.(L)/16".
