The scroll depicts two travellers in the mountains in search of the Dao. An adult man and a boy with a basket and a special narrow axe are looking for lingzhi mushrooms, in other words, they are looking for immortality. Of course, they head towards Xi Wang Mu, hoping for peaches from her immortal garden or for the healing nectar from this fruit. The lingzhi mushroom is a symbol of immortality. The axe is a symbol of cutting off secular lusts. The boy is a symbol of good luck, happiness and a secure old age. The scroll is part of a set of 11 vertical scrolls that compose a single work depicting scenes from Chinese mythology, namely the journey of the Daoist Immortals to Xi Wang Mu.
