A pencil copy by Yulian Zaiats reproduces the portrait of Mrs. Fenza Sobotka (1912) based on the work of the Austrian-American artist of American origin, John Quincy Adams. All the details of the original have been reinterpreted and stylised in the artist's graphic manner, but the basic composition and characteristic elements of the figure and surroundings have been preserved. In Adams' original, the model sits upright in a golden, throne-like antique Empire-style armchair with one armrest. Her right hand rests on the armrest, while her left hand playfully holds a long pearl necklace. The model is dressed in a long, shiny white silk dress, over which a purple chiffon ribbon is casually draped, stretching from the chair to the floor. Her chestnut hair is pulled up and secured with a black headband decorated with gold. In his copy, Y. Zaiats transforms the luxurious colour accents of the original into the tones of a pencil drawing, using gradations of light and shadow to convey texture. The lines executed by the author are soft yet confident, which gives the figure a balanced elegance. Particular attention is paid to the model's posture and gestures, which retain the ironic elegance and delicate theatricality characteristic of the portrait by John Quincy Adams.
