Object description
The sculptural image of the Crucifixion has been preserved in fragments, which allows us to perceive only the general composition. The central part of the vertical part of the cross is occupied by the figure of the Saviour. The modelling of the body's plasticity is anatomically realistic, reproduced without excessive naturalism, but with an emphasis on suffering. The curved body, bent legs, and bowed head add dramatic tension to the composition. The bowed head and lowered eyelids convey the moment of transition from earthly life to spiritual salvation. The textured face, with closed eyes, is imbued with both calmness and tragedy at the same time. Christ is presented not only as a martyr, but also as a Saviour who accepted death with humility. The crucifixion combines a realistic interpretation of the human body with a deep spiritual subtext based on the ideas of sacrifice, suffering, and salvation.
