Object description
The carved head of the angel has significant losses of the paint layer and primer, partially revealing the texture of the wood. The rounded face, framed by waves of short hair, is distinguished by soft, generalised features. A high open forehead, large almond-shaped eyes edged with clear eyelid lines, a snub nose, and expressive lips characterise the carefully crafted face of the cherub. The sculpted head, accompanied by an adjacent wing, symbolises the angelic essence, personifying purity, innocence, and heavenly beauty. The work was part of the ornamental decoration of the altar, iconostasis, or architectural composition. The cherub not only adorned the interior of the sacred building, but also emphasised the idea of spiritual elevation.
