Biography
Karol Emil Boratyński-Jurkiewicz (1806 or 22 July 1810–7 November 1876) was a Polish painter and graphic artist whose biography is known only in fragments. The artist spent his childhood in the vicinity of Kraków. He later studied at the Kraków School of Fine Arts under J. Brodowski. In the 1830s, he began exhibiting his works under a pseudonym. He was fond of mystifications, pretending to be an aristocrat and using the Korczak coat of arms. He led a luxurious lifestyle, travelling between London, Paris and Rome. While living in England, he signed his works with the pseudonym Boratyński. Later, he claimed to have been a cavalry officer and to have been awarded the Cross of Military Virtue for heroism in battle. In 1840–1841, he moved to Rome. In 1842, he settled in Florence, where he founded an art studio and lectured at the Academy. In 1848, he received the honorary title of professor of the Florentine Academy. He was acquainted with prominent Polish poets, artists, and aristocrats, including A. Mickiewicz. He exhibited his works at least three times at the Krakow Society of Friends of Fine Arts. In 1850–1852 and 1855–1856, he lived in Warsaw. In 1853–1854, he was in Paris, where he created a family portrait of the Czartoryski family. In 1854, he participated in an art exhibition in Lviv. On 27 February 1856, he returned to Florence. In 1860, a landscape by E. Boratyński from the collection of W. Dzieduszycki was exhibited in Lviv and received favourable reviews. That same year, the artist returned to Paris. From the beginning of 1863, he lived in Freiburg. He spent the last years of his life in solitude. He died on 7 November 1876 in Paris.
